A. Check

1. Fuel – Ensure you have ample fuel (Petrol/Diesel/Charge) in your vehicle before you set off on your journey, allowing additional just in case of delays.

2. Maintenance – Check your Oil level, Wipers, Lights & check your screen wash – Ensure your screen wash has the proper amount of anti-freeze dilution.

3. Tyres – Check your tyre pressure and ensure it is at the correct pressure. The legal limit on tyres in Ireland is 1.6mm, however, the more tread the better, especially in wintery conditions. Check that you have a spare wheel in your boot, most modern cars do not have one, they have an inflation kit – Familiarise yourself with this or drop into one of our branches and our staff will explain to you.

B. When driving

1. Driving style – Drive at a reduced speed and leave an extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

2. Awareness – Treat every road as if there is black ice on it. You cannot see black ice, and usually you only notice this when your vehicle is becoming unresponsive through the steering wheel.

3. Reactions – Know your limitations. Most vehicles are either Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive in Ireland. If you get into a skid, steer into the skid to regain control and when braking, gently does it.

C. Self

1. Carry some blankets in your car in case you need to keep warm.

2. Food – Water, flask & a snack

3. Safety – Hi Vis vest, a torch, and a warning triangle.
